HELMSLEY-GATE, a parish in the district of York and N. R. Yorkshire; on the river Derwent, and on the York and Market-Weighton railway, 6 miles ENE of York. It has a station on the railway; and its post town is Stamford-Bridge, under York. Acres, 520. Real property, £1, 464. Pop. in 1851, 293; in 1861, 200. Houses, 44. The decrease of pop. was caused by the discontinuance of a lunatic asylum. The property is subdivided. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of York. Value, £11 4. Patron, the Archbishop of York. The church is very good; and there is a Wesleyan chapel, built in 1861.
