Auchengelloch, an eminence, 1514 feet above sea-level, in the south-eastern uplands of Avondale parish, W Lanarkshire, 5¾ miles S of Strathaven. A frequent meeting-place of the Covenanters for religions worship in the times of the persecution, it is quite inaccessible to cavalry, and seems never to have been approached by the mounted troopers; and it has now a small stone monument, erected about 1830, in memory of the meetings held at it.
