Descriptive Gazetteer Entry for Kilrush

Kilrush.-- seaport town and par., SW. co. Clare, on the estuary of river Shannon, 27 miles SW. of Ennis - par., 15,658 ac., pop. 7270; town, pop. 3805; P.O., T.O., 2 Banks, 2 newspapers. Market-day, Wednesday. Steamers ply regularly on the Shannon between Kilrush and Limerick. There is considerable trade in grain and timber. The nearest ry. sta. is Ennis, but during the summer months vessels sail daily in connection with the trains at Foynes, which is 18 miles farther up the river; in vicinity is the seat of Kilrush House.
