Chat Moss, peat-bog, in S. of Lancashire, 7 miles W. of Manchester; has an area of 10 sq. m., and varies in depth from 10 to 30 ft.; the Liverpool and Manchester Ry. was successfully carried across it in 1829 through the engineering skill of George Stephenson.
