Balmoral Castle, royal residence, Crathie par., W. Aberdeensh., on river Dee, 52½ m. W. of Aberdeen. The estate was purchased by Queen Victoria in 1848, and in 1853 the present castle was built in place of the old one; a deer forest of 30,000 ac. belongs to the estate. The ry. sta. is Ballater, 9 m. E.; 572 m. from London.
