Mitcham, par. and vil. with ry. sta., Surrey, on river Wandle, 2¼ miles SE. of Wimbledon and 3¾ miles NW. of Croydon, 2915 ac., pop. 8960; P.O., T.O.; is the Michelham of Domesday Book; in the neighbourhood are extensive market gardens and great plantations of lavender, roses, and other aromatic herbs, for the mfr. of scents and essences; on the Wandle are numerous mills.
