Descriptive Gazetteer Entry for St Clears

St Clears, small town, river port, and par. with ry. sta., in co. and 8 miles NW. of Carmarthen, 2534 ac., pop. 988; P.O., T.O, 1 Bank. St Clears is situated at the head of the estuary formed by the confluence of the Glynin and Dewi-fawr with the Taf; is an ancient corporate town, founded in 6th century, and possessing charters of Richard II. and Henry VI. The port is accessible to vessels of 80 tons. In vicinity of the town is a mound marking the site of an ancient castle demolished in 1215.
