Ribble, river, Yorkshire and Lancashire; rises on Whernside mountain, at Ribblehead, and flows S. past Settle and Gisburn to the border of Lancashire, traces the border 6 miles SW. past Clitheroe, then proceeds SW. across Lancashire, past Preston, to the Irish Sea; is navigable to Preston, where it gradually expands into an estuary, about 5½ miles wide between Southport and Lytham; SE. of Stanner Point, N. side of entrance, is a lighthouse, with intermittent light (Ribble River) 81 ft. above high water and seen 12 miles.
