Descriptive Gazetteer Entry for Johnstone

Johnstone.-- manufacturing town, Abbey par., Renfrewshire, on the Black Cart, 3 miles W. of Paisley and 9½ W. of Glasgow by rail, pop. 9267; P.O., T.O., 3 Banks. Johnstone dates from 1781. It stands in the midst of an important mining district, and is a thriving industrial centre, with flax mills, cotton mills, and engineering works. In S. vicinity is Johnstone Castle, seat.
