Descriptive Gazetteer Entry for Ironbridge

Ironbridge, eccl. dist. and ry. sta. (Ironbridge and Broseley), Madeley par., Shropshire, forming part of town of Madeley, and 15 miles SE. of Shrewsbury, pop. 3154; P.O., T.O., 1 Bank, 1 newspaper; derives its name from the bridge (1779) which here crosses the Severn, and which is interesting as being the first cast-iron bridge of large dimensions built in this country. Extensive coal mines and ironworks are in the vicinity.
