Bournemouth has sprung up within the last fifty years, and owes its fame as a watering-place to the great variety of its picturesque scenery and to the mildness of its climate, making it a favourite resort for invalids during winter and early spring. There are sands, extending about 3 miles from E. to W.; rugged cliffs, in many places indented with chines and dells; and picturesque pleasure-grounds bordering the Bourne stream. The pier, 838 ft. long, is a pleasant promenade.
