Descriptive Gazetteer Entry for Somerton

Somerton, market town and par., Somerset, 5 miles NE. of Langport, 6295 ac., pop. 1917; P.O., T.O., 2 Banks. Market-day, Tuesday. The town stands on an eminence near the river Cary, is an ancient place, and gave name to the county of Somerset. There is an endowed school. In addition to the weekly market, there are several important fairs for horses, cattle, sheep, &c.
