Descriptive Gazetteer Entry for Roscrea

Roscrea, market town with ry. sta., co. Tipperary, and par., partly also in King's co., on river Little Brosna, 44 miles NE. of Limerick and 77 miles SW. of Dublin - par., 10,653 ac., pop. 4637; town, pop. 2801; P.O., T.O., 2 Banks, 2 newspapers. Market-days, Thursday and Saturday. Roscrea has a good retail trade and several flour mills. There is an ancient round tower, and the infantry barracks are within the walls of the old castle (1213).
