Descriptive Gazetteer Entry for Longtown

Longtown.-- market town with ry. sta., Arthuret par., Cumberland, on river Esk, 9½ miles NW. of Carlisle; P.O., T.O., 1 Bank. Market-days, Monday and Thursday. Longtown is an ancient place, founded by the Graemes of Netherby; it has risen within comparatively recent times from a poor village to the position of a spacious well-built town. It is a seat of petty sessions. In addition to the markets there is an important fair for horses.
