Most of the data values in the system are counts of numbers of people, but it also includes counts of households, and measurements in acres and hectares, for example.

This measurement unit was created for use with farm census data, where a 'holding' will usually be a farm. A holding is not the same as a property, as a single land owner may own a large number of farms each rented and operated by a different farmer.
